Gaia Viking Voyage 2005
In the summer of 2005, Gaia sailed the old viking route from Vestfold
to Dublin. With this voyage we put the spotlight on 3 different areas:
- We celebrated the fact that the Vikings came from the area around
the Oslo fjord known as Viken. And that it was Vestfold Vikings that
settled in Dublin. Excavations of the first Norwegian city, Kaupang,
and excavations in Dublin confirm this. The word Viking means the people
of Viken, and Vestfold is the homeland of the Vikings.

- It has been a 125 years since the excavation of the Gokstad
ship. According to Irish historical annals and the Islandic sagas,
Olav Geirstadalv that was buried in the Gokstad ship and the first king
of Dublin Amlaph (Aulaffe) may well have been the same person.
- The Norwegian 100 years anniversary. The excavations of the Gokstad
and the Oseberg ships were important to give Norwegians a sense of national
pride in 1905.
The voyage of 2005 was a peaceful trade expedition. And we was joined
some of the leading enterprises in Vestfold.
Gaia arrived home safely on 1st of september 17:30 after saileing more
than 2700 nautical miles
The picture is taken just after arrival Sandefjord, showing most of the
